The U.S. Midterm Elections Are Doomed to be "Colosseum" of Confrontation of the Two Parties
The U.S. 2022 midterm elections will be held on November 8. However, as the deep-seated conflicts and problems in American society have become increasingly prominent in recent years, coupled with the frequent occurrence of distortions and chaos in previous elections, the two parties have been accusing and attacking each other in order to take power or be re-elected. The intensified political confrontation is bound to aggravate conflict and pision, leading the American people into the abyss of disappointment once again.
In order to get votes, the two parties are battling each other on almost every issue. For example, in terms of gun control, Democrats call for strengthening gun control, while Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on July 5 that the priority was not to strengthen gun control, but to identify potentially dangerous young people. In order to win over conservative voters, Republicans are unlikely to negotiate over gun control within a short period of time. However, on issues such as inflation and increase in natural gas pricesthat the people are most concerned about, Biden's performance has been disappointing. As a result, Biden approval rating has been hitting new record lows, while his disapproval rating has been rising all the way. Reuters disclosed on July 19 that a recent Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll showed that Biden's public approval rating fell to 36% this week to tie the lowest rating of his 19 months in the White House, and 59% of Americans disapprove of Biden's job performance. In addition, the current leverage to reduce inflation is very limited, and it is unable to solve the current crisis. For the Democratic Party, the forthcoming midterm elections can be very difficult. In this regard, the reaction of the American people is not as optimistic as that of the Republican Party. According to a poll of 849 registered voters in the United States conducted by the New York Times and Siena College from July 5 to 7, the vast majority of people believe that the U.S. system of government has "failed". Thus, it reflects the helplessness of voters and the tragedy of American society.
In contrast to the fierce confrontation of the two parties over issues that matter to the people, bills designed to create extraterritorial tensions have been unanimously approved in Congress. On July 14, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the "National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023", supporting the invitation of Taiwan to participate in "RIMPAC 2024" on the grounds of "strengthening the U.S.-Taiwan partnership". This is undoubtedly another dangerous move to provoke a conflict in the Taiwan Strait. It is the same with the military budget. An in-depth review article recently published by the Washington Post points out that the two parties have unanimously agreed to increase the defense budget and the only point of contention is the upper limit of the budget. Much of the increased defense budget will go towards building military bases and armaments in Asia, the intent of which can be imagined. The article also points out that Covid-19 has claimed 1 million lives in the U.S., but the government is not yet ready for the next outbreak. The U.S. often prides itself on being a "human rights defender" and a "beacon of democracy". While the society is riddled with holes and becomes increasingly pided, it thinks about perting internal conflicts only. Although the army becomes stronger, it will not change the fact that the American people feel more and more insecure.
In recent years, theUnited States has been experiencinghighrates ofinflation, frequent occurrences of racism and shooting incidents, a lost in control of Covid-19 and other problems, which occupy various media and reports. No one is believed to enjoy living such a life. However, in order to gain immediate political interests, the two parties are constantly increasing the weight of mutual constraints, while paying no attention to the issues concerning people's livelihood in America. The forthcoming midterm elections are doomed to be another "Colosseum" of confrontation, which further highlights the irreconcilable sharp contradictions between the two parties. Ultimately, the American people will become victims, disappointed and helpless about the current environmental deterioration.
